What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a healing system created by the Chinese thousands of years ago (though it has evolved through the years). In Chinese medicine, life energy—known as qi (chee)—flows through channels in our bodies and through all living things. We call these channels meridians. As long as there is sufficient qi and it is flowing smoothly through the meridians, there is no imbalance and therefore no illness. If the qi becomes insufficient, blocked or stagnant, the patient may experience symptoms of this imbalance, such as pain, PMS, headaches, digestive problems, etc. In order to supplement the qi and/or restore its free flow and thereby stop the symptoms, we manipulate the qi of the meridians. There are points along these meridians where the qi comes close to the surface of the skin. It is at these acupuncture points that we can supplement the qi and encourage it to smoothly flow again.
